Dear Friends,
As you may know, a good friend and co-worker at Oakley Cycles, Matt Schaefer,
recently lost his life due to a malignant brain tumor. Two summers ago, he wasnʼt
feeling well and suspected that he was dehydrated after riding in the sweltering
Cincinnati summer heat. When he visited his doctor, he had no idea this would be
his last day of work. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and
immediately began a regime of surgery, chemo-therapy, and radiation that lasted
for two years. The proverbial rug was pulled out from under his feet. Matt
handled his fate with great courage, much humor and grace. He was an
inspiration to all of us; as we say in the cycling world, a good wheel to follow.
Without the great care at the University of Cincinnati and University Hospitalʼs
Brain Tumor Center, Matt may not have had the two years to share lots of love,
laughs and precious time with his amazing family and friends. His type of brain
tumor often viciously kills in days or weeks. All of us who loved Matt are grateful
for the extra time to enjoy his wit, political satire, needling and generous kindness.
Matt often wore a t-shirt to work emblazoned with “Climb Every Mountain.” I
secretly coveted this shirt and later discovered that Matt and I shared a curiosity
and desire to perhaps climb at least one mountain, someday. Well, someday has
arrived for me, as Iʼm not getting any younger and life is full of surprises.
Next month, my sister, Sarah Stahr and I are going to climb Mt. Shuksan in the
North Cascades of Washington state. (pictured in the background) No, itʼs not
Everest, but it does involve glacier travel, ice axes and crampons and is daunting
for those afraid of heights. (that would be me!) We are climbing in honor of Matt
and to raise a few dollars and awareness for the Brain Tumor Center at University

Kathy and I just returned from the Serotta International Cycling Institute Symposium in Denver, where we attended lectures and seminars on biomechanics and advanced bicycle fitting topics. We applaud Ben Serotta and Ray Browning for making the investment in the SICI and taking a leading role in our industry regarding bicycle fit and biomechanics.
